DNS Server Software

The following list is one of the most popular DNS servers online, Starting with BIND and ending with task specific servers.

DNS servers are either recursive servers, or authoritative servers, Authoritive servers are the servers responsible for maintaining records for domain names, recursive servers resolve domain names by talking to a domain's (Host's) authoritative servers and follows the chain until a final answer is obtained.

In this list, i will be presenting both simply because most nameservers function as recursive servers and authoritative servers.

• BIND:
  Bind (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) is the most well known, most deployed Nameserver of all time, In other words, it is the de facto standard. of nameservers.
  Bind 9 supports IPv6, Bind is also still ahead of the curve, Bind can now read it's zone data from a variety of database formats (With the DLZ patch) including LDAP, Berkeley DB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and ODBC, Leaving very little advantage for any other nameserver out there, Bind is FREE software
• Microsoft DNS
  Microsoft DNS ships with Microsoft Server Operating Systems
• MyDNS / MyDNS-NG
  This DNS server is a nice one, I personally like the ease of setup for this DNS server, Just get a database and a database user ready, Compile this, and fix the config file, It also ships with a small PHP utility to modify Zone Data.
• djbdns
  Djbdns is a collection of DNS tools, While Bind comes with both a resolver and an authorive name server, Djbdns splits the tasks between TinyDNS (authoritative nameserving via UDP)and dnscache (A resolver). TunyDNS is written by Daniel J. Bernstein, Famous for his qmail mail software.
• NSD
  NSD is probably an important software because it is used for testing DNSSEC, And another interesting fact is that NSD hosts several top-level domains, and operates three of the root nameservers.
• Dnsmasq
  Dnsmasq is a small DNS FORWARDER, resolver, and DHCP Server, This server is suited for situations with special memory requirements such as Linux Routers (See DD-WRT)
