Mod Rewrite for Apache

To enable mod rewrite for a web server running Debian Lenny, we issue the command

a2enmod rewrite

Once done, we will need to restart apache

/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

One important thing to note is, for better performance it is much better to set the rewrite rules from within your apache config files and disable .htaccess, with .htaccess enabled, apache will need to check for .htaccess file existance with every page, image, or file load, it is best left off since configuration in the apache config files is loaded in memory and does not cost any disk access.
