To create a new fill or adjustment layer in Photoshop click at the create a new fill or adjustment button at the bottom of the layers palette, you'll notice that these layers are not really different from the image layer because both of them have the same blending mode options and opacity options as well.
When you click on the create a new fill or adjustment layer a pop-up menu will appear, this pop-up menu contains the following options:
Solid color Gradient Pattern Levels Curves Color Balance Brightness/Contrast. Black and White Hue/Saturation Selective color. Channel mixer Gradient map Photo filter Exposure Invert Threshold Posterize
To know exactly what each option does please visit the color adjustment page. But here we will be explaining the ones that you won't see in the Image menu - Color Adjustments.
a.Solid color: when you choose the solid color option, this will automatically create a new layer linked with a color fill mask, and it will also open a color picker box so that you can choose the solid color that you want.
b.Gradient: when you choose the gradient option, this will automatically create a new layer linked to a gradient fill mask, and it will also open a gradient fill box so that you can choose the gradient you want to use, the style of the gradient, the angle of the gradient, and the scale percentage of the, you can also choose it you want the gradient you choose to be in reverse, Dither, and aligned with layer.
c.Pattern: when you choose the pattern option, this will automatically create a new layer linked with a pattern fill mask, and it will also open a pattern fill box that you can choose the pattern you want to use, set the scale percentage for the pattern, if you want it to be linked or not with layer and if you want to reset the pattern position click on snap to origin.
