Dedicated IP address

What is a Dedicated IP and why would i need it

SEO.

Although search engine algorithms are a secret kept as closely as possible to search engine companies, There is very strong evidence that Search Engines use a website's IP address as one of the variables that determine a website's relationship with other websites.

So for example, If two websites of yours are on the same IP address, Connected to each other via hyperlinks, serving rather similar content, A search engine will probably find out that you own both from a number of factors like the WhoIs information of the websites and the IP address that is shared between them.

Many would argue that 2 different IP addresses will not do the trick, and the word on the internet is that you would probably want to have them on separate Class-C networks.

From an SEO standpoint, even without taking this into account, You should not own multiple domains with identical content, It fragments your marketing power, and serves no purpose. Some argue that the initial pagerank is to be gained with google, But really, no search term worth conquering is achieved with an initial page rank.

But this may or may not mean that a dedicated IP address is beneficial in SEO, here are some theories that i am very skeptical of, but they do have there supporters.

1- Websites on dedicated IP addresses get an SEO advantage 2- To avoid situations of being on a penalized IP address, Since if no one is sharing an IP address with you, and you do no wrong, it is very unlikely the IP address will be penalized. 3- Some argue that sharing an IP address with spammers, Adult websites and illegal websites can have your website treated differently by search engines

So there you have it, Nothing is for sure in terms of SEO, but there are other uses of dedicated IP addresses that i will tell you about next

SSL Certificates

If you want your website accessible via SSL, You would probably be considering an SSL certificate from a trusted authority, An SSL Certificate requieres that your website has it's own IP address

Generic Applications

You can have your website respond to any domain name pointing to it, and with some programming languages like PHP, you can have it serve different content for different domain names that point to it.

Anonymous FTP

When you make a web request for a page by pointing your browse to a website, the browser tells the web server what domain name (host) you are trying to access, so in the headers of the request (Invisible), your browser says to the server (I contacted you to try and open a page at easywebdns.com) for example, But FTP is a much older protocol that does not do that, So in order for you to make Anonymous FTP possible, you will need a dedicated IP address
